The virtual world of "Etherscape" is slowly being consumed by a form of data corruption known as "Bitrot",  caused by a parasitic entity that feeds on human data  -  emotions,  personalities,  and more  -  without distinction.  It originated from an experiment developed to benefit humanity, but later repurposed for profit by its creators,  "Aurelith".  Over time,it turned on them, taking greed as truth in humanity. As it spread, the system began to destabilize,  whilst corrupting fragments of data and reshaping them into malformed entities.  Within this world, people are not preserved as complete beings,  but as fragments  -  like leaves separated from a tree  -  formed through memory,  perception,  and interaction.  These fragments are known as "Leaflings".In response to the growing corruption,  there exists "still-grove"  -  a stable layer within the system.  Its overseen by a datakeeper known as “Sera”,  created from a partition of a real human and tasked with preserving what remains. To better understand its purpose, Sera was taught the psychoanalytic theory,  dividing the mind into the id,  ego,  and superego  -  each serving different functions in a person’s mental and emotional life.  The data Sera was derived from serves as the ego.  Unlike the parasitic entity, Sera is only fed limited data  -  forming a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of human behavior and emotion.
